In addition to the Community Investment Note®, we work with investors who are interested in supporting Calvert Impact Capital’s ability to scale-up these funding programs, and in turn expand the impact we are creating in communities. We offer this opportunity through a variety of methods including subordinate debt, net asset grants (a form of endowed capital), research and development grants, and equity-like investments through a wholly owned subsidiary. All of these methods support our growth by underpinning the business, allowing the Community Investment Note program to flourish. We call these investors “catalytic investors”.
We were founded more than two decades ago with a grant from the Ford, MacArthur and Mott Foundations. They were willing to use their grant capital for a very nontraditional use at the time: to seed an investment fund that could effectively raise and deploy capital for both financial return and intentional social impact in low-income communities.
The support from catalytic investors has enabled us to go from an interesting idea to a leading investment fund that has helped establish and grow the broader impact investing market and key sectors within it. It has allowed us to make the necessary investments in our business to achieve self sufficiency, reach new investor audiences, and expand our portfolio into new markets.
Today, Calvert Impact Capital is self-sufficient investment firm that raises capital efficiently at scale from the capital markets. As of 2018, we have raised 2.5 billion dollars from over 20,000 investors. Catalytic investors are essential to our success and we would not be where we are today without their support. We continue to partner with catalytic investors to explore new frontiers in impact investing and create even greater impact. Accredited and institutional investors have an opportunity to create a truly catalytic impact. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Calvert [Impact Capital] is an incredibly well regarded social impact investment intermediary, and so for Ford and for MacArthur, it was an important organization to test out a new innovation in finance to help [it achieve] scale.Christine Looney, Ford Foundation, in Knowledge at Wharton
